For occupational health providers

Pre-placement assessment for occupational health providers.

Pre-placement assessment determines fitness for a specific role after a conditional offer. Occentra supports the occupational health workflow from referral and job demands through clinical assessment to a fitness-for-role opinion with recommended adjustments.

Pre-placement vs pre-employment screening

Assessment of fitness for a specific role, not a general health screen.

Pre-placement assessment is the occupational health evaluation of whether a candidate is fit for the specific demands of an offered role. It happens after a conditional offer and considers job demands, hazards and any adjustments that would allow the person to work safely. It is not a general health screen, an HR hiring tool or a questionnaire-only pathway.

Pre-placement assessment

A clinical occupational health assessment after a job offer, evaluating fitness for the specific role, its demands and hazards. Results in an OH opinion on fitness with any recommended adjustments.

Pre-employment screening

A questionnaire-based pathway that collects health information and identifies candidates who may need further occupational health review. Managed in pre-employment screening.

Occentra supports both pathways. Pre-employment screening may escalate to a pre-placement assessment where the questionnaire or role demands require clinical evaluation.

The assessment workflow

From referral and job demands to fitness-for-role opinion.

A pre-placement assessment follows the work from the initial request through to a clinical opinion and released report. Each step sits in Occentra's referral-to-case model.

  1. 01

    Receive the referral

The employer or client submits a pre-placement assessment request. The referral captures the offered role, job demands, relevant hazards and the questions the employer needs answered.

  2. 02

    Review job demands and hazards

Occupational health reviews the role requirements, physical or cognitive demands, environmental factors and any regulatory considerations before determining the assessment pathway.

  3. 03

    Collect relevant health information

A structured questionnaire gathers the health history relevant to the role. The form version is retained with each submission so historic assessments remain interpretable.

  4. 04

    Conduct clinical assessment where indicated

Where questionnaire responses or job demands require it, the clinician completes a clinical assessment. An appointment is scheduled, and findings are recorded against the case.

  5. 05

    Prepare the occupational health opinion

The clinician provides an opinion on fitness for the specific role, including any recommended adjustments, restrictions or further assessments. The software does not decide medical fitness.

  6. 06

    Release the report

The occupational health report is reviewed, approved and released to the referring employer. The opinion, any recommended adjustments and the case history remain available for future reference.

Job demands and hazards

The role context that shapes the assessment.

A pre-placement assessment only makes sense alongside the job demands, hazards and regulatory requirements of the offered role. Without that context, the clinician cannot provide an informed fitness opinion.

  • Physical, cognitive and sensory demands of the role
  • Environmental hazards and exposure risks
  • Safety-critical or regulatory requirements
  • Relevant immunisation or surveillance requirements

Occentra captures job demands as part of the referral, so the clinician has the role context before starting the assessment.

Adjustments and recommendations

The opinion may include recommended adjustments.

A pre-placement assessment does not simply return fit or unfit. The occupational health opinion may recommend workplace adjustments, modified duties, further assessment or ongoing monitoring. The software records and releases that opinion. It does not decide it.

Employment decisions remain with the employer. The Equality Act 2010 may require employers to consider reasonable adjustments. Occentra supports the occupational health service in providing informed recommendations.
